Sandstone

Sandstone

Because they are the most resistant minerals to the weathering processes at Earth’s surface, most sandstone is made of quartz or feldspar. Sandstone may have any color depending on the minerals’ contaminants, much like uncemented sand but, the most often occurring hues are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black. Sandstone beds may create very visible cliffs and other geographical features, so some hues of sandstone have become quite firmly associated with specific areas.

The color of a particular slab of sandstone may be rather attractive depending on the type and concentration of minerals in it. Composition affects the porosity of a particular stone. Sandstone is also often rated on the Mohs mineral hardness scale as 6-7. Likewise, the beauty of natural stone depends on the mountain from which it is extracted. Egyptian limestone is considered one of the most important natural stones known in the world. The South Al-Way area in southern Cairo is considered one of the most important areas for extracting Egyptian limestone.
