What Is Travertine?<\/h2>\n

Typically formed by hot springs, natural stone<\/a> tiles<\/strong> are known for their distinctive banded appearance and fibrous internal structure. Travertine<\/strong> is created through the inorganic precipitation of calcium carbonate minerals on the Earth’s surface, unlike speleothems that form inside caves. This process occurs when groundwater interacts with the atmosphere, allowing carbon dioxide to escape and calcium carbonate to be deposited. This definition excludes calcrete, lake deposits, and lake reefs, although both speleothems and tuff are included within the broader classification.<\/p>\n

How Is This Natural Stone Formed?<\/h2>\n

Most varieties are cream or white in color and consist primarily of calcium carbonate. The material develops as calcium carbonate gradually separates from mineral-rich water through evaporation. Because it is relatively easy to cut and shape, it has become one of the most widely used decorative building stones.<\/p>\n

In limestone regions, carbon dioxide-rich groundwater flows through the surrounding rock, dissolving limestone until it becomes saturated. As environmental conditions change, the water releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, causing calcium carbonate to recrystallize. During this process, small particles, vegetation, moss, algae, and cyanobacteria become coated with mineral deposits, and some biological material may continue growing over time.<\/p>\n

The Romans were among the first civilizations to quarry large deposits of this stone after it had naturally dried and hardened. It often remains porous and contains numerous natural cavities. Highly porous varieties are commonly known as Calcareous Tuff<\/strong> (German: Kalktuff<\/em>). In its purest form, the material is white and fine-grained, although natural impurities frequently create attractive shades ranging from cream and beige to brown and yellow.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
